The Cullen Sea School is entering into an exciting few weeks of accommodating several open water swimmers led by the group called The King’s Swimmers.
The King’s Swimmers are being led and coached by Kevin Murphy, Kathy Batts and Ian Muir who all have an outstanding record of open water swimming.
Kevin is acknowledged as one of the world’s greatest open water swimmers. To date he has 28 solo English Channel swims and three doubles to his credit. That total of 34 swims is a male record. He has also swam the North Channel three times and is known as King of both the English and North Channels.
Kathy is the expert when it comes to Channel relays. She has been in 18 teams that have conquered the Channel – as well as completing her own solo swim from England to France in 2013. Her swimming achievements date back to 1975 when she was a member of the youngest mixed relay team to swim the Channel.
Ian has three solo swims to his credit including third place in the 1981 International Channel Race. He has participated in, and organized, a number of cross Channel relays and competed against Kevin Murphy in an International 24-hour pool swim, breaking the existing record.
Swimmers taking part in the training include a Paralympian and a Channel swimmer Rosalinda Hardiman, another swimmer who is coming from Russia and members of a charity relay team training to swim the English Channel. A 14-year-old girl who competes in Scottish National Championships is also participating so is the owner of historic Castle of Park, not far from Cullen.
The swimmers will be completing training swims of up to six hours.
The Three Harbours Association owned Cullen Sea School will be accommodating the swimming events from Saturday, 23rdJune. As part of the event CSS’s own volunteers and staff will provide safety cover using the school’s RIBs and kayaks.
Katalin Urquhart, CSS manager added: “We are delighted for Kathy, Kevin and Ian getting in touch with us initially and putting not just the Cullen Sea School but the North of Scotland onto a map for open-water swimming. We envisage these camps being organised from year to year bringing tourist and watersports enthusiasts to our internationally acclaimedcoastline.”
